(19 feb. 1630 o abr. 1627, Shivner, Pune, India–3 abr. 1680, Rajgarh).

Rey indio (r. 1674–80), fundador del reino mahratta de India. Devoto hindú, creció en una época en que India era gobernada por los musulmanes y consideró intolerable su persecución religiosa. Al mando de un grupo de seguidores, comenzó 1655 a apoderarse de puestos fronterizos mal defendidos del sultán de Bijapur. En 1659 tendió una trampa al ejército del sultán y lo destruyó; luego se apoderó de sus caballos y armamentos y se convirtió rápidamente en un temible jefe militar. El emperador mogol Aurangzeb envió a su general más destacado y a un ejército de 100.000 hombres para capturarlo, pero Sivaji, mediante una maniobra audaz, se escapó. Se fortaleció aún más y sumó una fuerza naval a su poderío militar. En 1674 se proclamó soberano independiente. Forjó una alianza con los sultanes del sur, impidiendo así la expansión del dominio mogol. Su gobierno se destacó por su tolerancia religiosa. See also Confederación mahratta.
